Basic Tool Making for Blacksmithing

This two-day workshop focuses on the tools needed for a blacksmith shop. Beginning and intermediate level smiths are welcome. Like all workshops, this one will begin with a discussion on how to maintain a good fire. There will be an introduction to basic metallurgy and its application to heat treating operations such as annealing, normalizing, hardening, and tempering tool steel.

Participants will be provided “known alloys” to use in making the basic tools of tongs, a light hammer, and a punch. Participants are welcome to bring in and experiment with scrap steel, such a coil spring or a hay rake tine.

  • Participants must be a minimum of 18 years old.
  • This workshop can accommodate up to 4 students and needs a minimum of 3 to be held.
  • We urge students to register at least one month before the workshop start date.
  • A minimum of a one-day deposit is required with registration.
  • Cancellations received at least 30 days before the start date of the workshop will receive a refund, minus a $25 non-refundable registration fee.
  • Classes without a minimum number of students may be cancelled and a full refund will be provided.
