Come join textile artist Sara Goodman for a beautiful September weekend at the farm exploring our gardens and fields for plants that can be used to dye wool and other animal fibers.
On the first day of this workshop, students will learn how to prepare protein fiber for dyeing. We will properly scour and then mordant animal fibers with alum and iron so that we get rich, colorfast results with the natural dyes. On the second day, we will gather dye plants from the garden and the field to dye the yarn.
Students can bring their own yarn from home or bring the yarn you made in Prin Van Gulden’s spinning class. Very important: it must be protein: i.e. wool, silk, alpaca, llama, yak, angora, mohair — anything from an animal! Students will receive a notebook with all the recipes we use.
Please note that the time of this course differs Saturday to Sunday. Saturday, September, 19 is set for three hours so that students taking Hand Spinning are able to come directly to Dye Harvest with their newly-spun fiber. Course time on Sunday, September 20, is 10:00 a.m – 4:00 p.m.
Students Should Bring:
• Yarn y to dye
• Garden clippers
• Garden gloves
