Have you ever seen anyone dye with indigo? It seems like magic! However, it is actually quite a scientific process. Come join us for a fun-filled late summer evening at the farm experiencing the mystery and magic of this ancient dye with textile artist Sara Goodman. Sara will be teaching some basic shibori (Japanese tie-dye techniques).

Sara will describe the process as we dye: the indigo pigment only goes into solution at a high ph. The dye bath needs to be reduced — have the oxygen eliminated — for the pigment to attach to the cloth. Traditional artisans achieve the reduction with organic materials to create a fermentation process. The reduction turns the dye bath green. When the fiber comes out of the bath all green, it turns blue as it hits the oxygen in the air. To see the cloth go from green to blue before your eyes — that’s the magic!

You can bring any simple 100% cotton items from home for dyeing: t-shirts, bandanas, even socks. Just make sure they are thoroughly washed in detergent and hot water first. We will also be providing some “cotton blanks” from the dharmatrading.com website for you to purchase.

This workshop will be fun for the whole family. Bring dinner to share potluck-style. We’ll supply plates, silverware, drinkware, and dessert!
