Come join us for a two-day workshop on tool making. Beginning and intermediate level smiths are welcome. Like all workshops, this one will begin with a discussion on how to maintain a good fire. There will be an introduction to basic metallurgy and its application to heat treating operations such as annealing, normalizing, hardening, and tempering tool steel.
Participants will be provided “known alloys” to use in making a chisel, a light hammer, and a punch. Several approaches to the making of blacksmithing tongs will also be covered. Participants are also welcome to bring in and experiment with unknown steel, such a coil spring or a hay rake tine.
