Creating in Copper, Brass and Iron

Workshop Fee: $300.00

In this workshop students will learn how to cut, shape, then anneal copper and brass sheet, then sinking and raising to form a spoons, ladle and drip pan, then forge the iron parts to go with them:  candle holder arms, bases, and candle cups to make candle holders or handles for serving utensils.  Round out the set with a rack or fork if time permits. Beginners and experienced smiths are invited to try their hands on basic and more demanding designs.

Skills and Techniques:

  • Work with a traditional coal forge and mild steel
  • Body mechanics, metallurgy, and safety
  • Start and manage a coal-fired forge
  • Cut, shape, and anneal copper and brass sheet-metal
  • Forge iron components

 

Materials Fee: $35 paid at the time of workshop check-in.

Special Tools or Equipment: The farm makes available to students eye and ear protection, gloves, and aprons. Comfortable closed toed shoes and street clothes are recommended. If you have forge tools you like working with you are welcome to bring them.
