Adirondack “Sightseer” Pack Basket
August 7 @ 9:00 am - August 8 @ 4:00 pm$150
Students will create a pack basket patterned from the traditional Adirondack Pack Baskets. Adirondack Pack Baskets are one of the most recognized objects associated with the Adirondack region. Guides, hunters, and trappers, would use these versatile baskets to carry all of their essential materials into woods. The “Sightseer” size pack measures16” high x 8 ½” deep x 11” wide and is a perfect size for teens or adults.
On the first day, students will weave a plain-weave base with pre-cut spokes and then weave the sides. Linda will guide students as they concentrate on the basket shape, creating the basket’s belly while learning to continuous weave. The main weaving will be done the first day. Baskets will sit and dry overnight. On the second day, students will pack baskets tight, level the top, weave a false rim, cut and tuck spokes, insert a handle, fit the rim to the basket, and lash the rim. Lastly, an adjustable webbing or leather harness will be secured with skids.*
Instructor will bring all materials need to make the basket. Students will be using a drawknife and other sharp tools.
Students should wear comfortable clothing.
Baskets will not be stained during class.
*Students must choose one harness type.
