Tool Making (tongs, punches, forge poker, flux spoon) – Full

Time:  8 am to 4 pm
 Materials/studio fee:  $20 payable with registration
Meals:  Lunch featuring our farm grown food is included

Workshop Size:  This workshop can accommodate up to 4 students and needs a minimum of 3 to be held.


This two-day workshop focuses on making the essential tools needed for a blacksmith shop – tongs, punches, a forge poker, and a flux spoon.  Like all workshops, day one will start off with a reminder on how to maintain a good coal fire. There will be discussion on basic metallurgy and its application to heat treating operations such as annealing, normalizing, hardening, and tempering tool steel.2016-wksp-22-lo-res



Participants will be provided “known alloys” to use in making the basic tools. Participants are welcome to bring in and experiment with scrap steel, such a coil spring or a hay rake tine.


Beginning and intermediate level smiths are welcome and it is important to have some experience with using a coal fired forge.
