Blacksmithing: Carving Knife
May 8 @ 8:00 am - May 9 @ 4:00 pm$275.00
On the first day, students will forge a Scandinavian style carving knife blade. The bevel will be filed carefully by hand. Then, the blade will be hardened and tempered. On the second day, students will finish up their knife blade and make a wooden handle shaped to fit comfortably in their hand. Next, the blade will be honed to a razor edge. After the knife is complete, each student will make a birch bark sheath. Forging technique, steel selection, basic metallurgy, filing, heat treating, and sharpening will be covered as well as local wood selection and, time permitting, safe carving grips. This workshop is best suited to students with basic experience managing a coal fire and drawing a taper. Beginners who are up for a challenge are also welcome. No forge welding experience is needed.
