Art Underfoot – Painting Canvas Floorcloths

Taught by: Lisa Curry Mair

Workshop Fee: $250.00

Each student will paint a 24” X 36” floorcloth using a Rufus Porter landscape painting as a template with top quality materials, under the guidance of professional floorcloth/mural painter, Lisa Curry Mair. No previous painting or drawing experience is required. When completed, their floorcloth can be used in a hallway, in front of a kitchen sink or proudly hung on the wall.

Students will learn about the history and construction of floorcloths and each will learn how to transfer a design and create a beautiful landscape painting. They will also learn about Rufus Porter and his murals from the mid nineteenth century as they recreate this scene from Porter’s Westwood mural.

Materials Fee: $180 per person. This covers a pre-primed, hemmed 2’ X 3’ heavyweight canvas floorcloth, enough paint for the entire project, brushes, transfer paper, templates and a paint palette.

Special Tools or Equipment: Students should bring their favorite brushes if they have them, a sketchbook and pencil, white plastic eraser, painter’s tape, a 36” metal ruler, an empty 2 cup plastic margarine container for holding water and a hair dryer.
