Sharpening Woodworking Tools

Workshop Fee: $125.00

The foundation of accurate hand tool work is having sharp tools, and the key to successful sharpening is solid technique. This one-day workshop will cover the basics of sharpening a variety of woodworking tools from chisels and planes to card scrapers, spoke shaves, and more. Bring your dull woodworking tools and leave with them tuned up and ready for work. Open to all levels including beginners.

Skills and Techniques:

  • Assessing the condition of old tools
  • Grinding bevels on chisels and planes
  • Flattening tool backs
  • Using sharpening stones with honing guides and freehand
  • Sharpening a card scraper
  • Techniques for sharpening odd shaped tools

 

Materials Fee:  $15

Special Tools or Equipment: Please bring:

  • Safety glasses and ear protection
  • Tape measure or folding rule
  • Pencil (preferably mechanical pencils with lead, or 2mm lead holder)
  • Combination Square – 4”, 6” and/or 12”
  • Dull woodworking tools
  • Any sharpening equipment you might have — stones, guides etc
