Flax Processing Part 2

Workshop Fee: $125.00

Students will spend the day learning how to spin flax into linen yarns. Students will take an in depth journey on the history of flax as we learn where to find line stricts, how to dress a distaff, and tips and tricks to get the linen yarn you desire. We will finish the day discussing finishing techniques. Students should know how to spin a little. But no prior flax experience is necessary.

 Skills and Techniques:

  • How to spin on a drop spindle and wheel (students do not have to do both)
  • How to dress a distaff
  • How to choose good line fibers to spin
  • Blending techniques
  • Finishing yarns
  • Gain knowledge on the history of flax and linen

 

Materials Fee: $25 paid directly to instructor. Fee covers flax ready to spin and handouts.

Special Tools or Equipment: Working spinning wheel or drop spindle. Instructor has drop spindles for the entire class and a limited number of spinning wheels. SMF also has spinning wheels to loan.
