Half Mortise Chest Lock

This simple chest lock is a great introduction to learning basic traditional locksmithing techniques. Many of the ideas and techniques covered will build a good foundation for more advanced projects. This lock is perfect for reactors, restoring an old chest or making a custom lock for a new wood working project.
Cold work is an important part of traditional locksmithing. Students will layout pieces to be made from sheet steel and produce those parts with cold working techniques utilizing various tools (including a couple tools they will make). Students will also take their rough forged parts and file them to shape. Filing is a huge part of this type of work. We will cover some files and techniques.
Students should expect to spend most of their time doing cold bench/vise work.
Students in this class should at least be well seasoned beginners that are comfortable in the forge, having taken at least a basic forging class and spent some time practicing those skills. Experience with filing and cold work is a huge plus.

Materials Fee: $40 Paid directly to the instructor.
Special Tools or Equipment if students have them: Files, flat safe edge, needle files, 3/8” round file, 1/4” round fill, metal ruler, combination square, outside calipers, marking Gauge, center punch, dividers, small pliers, small riveting hammer, stool to sit at the vise.
