Old Plaster Repair Using Modern Materials

Taught by: Emmett O'Carroll

Workshop Fee: $250.00

In this hands-on workshop students will be given the basic skills required to identify and fix common minor problems that occur with old or damaged plasterwork, detachment from lathe or surface cracking, etc. While we will focus on using modern Gypsum based plasters, we will also look at the lime-based plasters that were used in original lathe and lime plaster work. While doing this we will also get to see how some of the tools and techniques of old are still used today.

During this two-day workshop students will be taught to use plaster tools and products on sample boards that they will take home.

 Skills and Techniques:

  • Identifying Plaster related problems
  • Product knowledge, both new and old
  • Product and surface preparation
  • Tool usage and care
  • Product finishing and techniques

Materials Fee: $50 paid directly to instructor.

Special Tools or Equipment: Students are welcome to bring any plaster tools they wish, but the instructor will provide all tools required for the class. If you have any tools you have used in the past, you are encouraged to bring them along. This is the kind of trade where each individual may feel better using different types of trowels, spatula, hawk etc.

This workshop is offered in partnership with the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance.
