Blacksmithing: Advanced Basics #1

This class is designed for those with some experience working at the anvil and using a coal forge, who wish to improve their skills and leave with a nice finished piece or two.  Students will gain additional mastery in the basics, with an emphasis on getting an ideal heat in a well-maintained fire and proper body mechanics leading to greater skill in the basic operations.

A few special techniques will be introduced and applied to the manufacture of a taper candle holder:  forging hollow stock (for the candle cup), working with brass sheet (for the drip pan), and hard soldering and thread cutting by drilling and tapping (to join the parts).

Materials Fee: Included in cost of the workshop.

Special Tools or Equipment: The farm makes available to students eye and ear protection, gloves, and aprons. Comfortable closed toed shoes and street clothes are recommended. If you have forge tools you like working with you are welcome to bring them.
