Chair Caning

Taught by: Meg Kupiec

Workshop Fee: $250.00

A true art form that dates back centuries. Working with strand cane, you will learn the traditional 7 step method that can be used on any chair that is hand caned. You will be working on your own chair. Any repairs or refinishing must be completed before you come to class. This is your chance to restore a treasured family piece or complete that fixer upper project you’ve had for a while. A small, square or rectangular seat will be the most practical for this class. If you remove the cane prior to class, please save a sample of the seat and bring it with you. You will also be asked to send a small sample of the old cane to the instructor so that she can have the correct size on hand for you to weave. If your chair does not have old cane on it already keep in mind that it must have the holes! This is a hand caning class so chairs meant to accommodate pre-woven pressed cane (chairs without holes) are not appropriate for this workshop.

Send any questions about the chair you plan to bring to marsha@sanbornmills.org.

Skills and Techniques:

  • Learn how to prepare your chair and safely remove old cane.
  • How to prepare cane for weaving
  • How to care for the chair seat to maximize its life

Materials Fee: $40.00 paid directly to the instructor. Fee covers the cost of cane, caning pegs, and small awl and screwdriver.

Special Tools or Equipment: Students should bring a small water bucket, towel, and scissors.

Workshop Policies: Please be sure to read our policies before you register for a workshop which can be found here Workshop Policies
